I’d like to take a few moments – to explain to you something – that I know confuses a lot of people.
How do I know this? Because it confused me for months – and nobody could explain it simply….
I’d like to take a few moments – to explain to you the difference between 3G AND WiFi.
Now — here’s the thing….
…both 3G and WiFi – are ways to connect to the internet.
That’s all they are.
Lets look at both in a bit of detail.
Wifi means ‘Wireless Free.’ Literally – being able to connect to the internet using no wires.
Most homes and offices and coffee shops have WiFi. At home you will need to buy a WiFi router – and once it is plugged in – you can surf the web from your laptop/cell phone anywhere within the radius of the WiFi (which is usually just your home and yard/garden).
3G is something different.
3G – is a service that cell phone networks provide.
Anywhere there is a phone signal – you can use your phone companies 3G service – to get online.
This means – if you are out in your local supermarket – you can connect to the internet using your phone companies 3G network.
Basically 3G is just a phone signal that is very fast and comparable to WiFi.
So lets say you are at home and you want to get on the web.
If you have WiFi – you would use this. And this would be the same internet connection that your Internet Service Provider gives you.
But if you do not have internet access at home – you could use your phone companies 3G to get online.
3G vs WiFi – a summary:
WiFi: is a wireless connection in your home or office (simply a wireless connection to your internet like the ones laptops use)
3G: is a type of Cell/mobile phone network…meaning its a connection you can use ANYWHERE you have phone signal.
A few things you should know:
- While some Internet Service Providers offer both 3G and WiFi internet, they usually consider them separate services and require separate subscriptions.
- 3G is almost always more expensive than WiFi – so when WiFi is available — use it!
- 3G can be quite fast -but is in most cases WiFi is faster.
Now – while we are on the subject – let me quickly throw in….
…4G!
What is 4G then?
Quite simply – 4G is beginning to appear on tv ads. 4G is the successor to 3G – that’s all.
It will do the same thing as 3G (ie provide Internet Access from a phone signal) but it promises to be a lot faster and quicker (and no doubt more expensive…)
I hope this may have been helpful for you !
